First of all, let me say that I can not wait to see 8 Bit Weapon live at the opening of the Art of Video Games Exhibit the weekend of March 16th.
And now for a track by track review…
1. Bits with Byte
I wasn’t a fan of the intro of this track at first, but now its actually one of my favorite tracks on the album.
2. Galactic Invasion
A slow and droning bassline, this track brings up thoughts of space travel as you may have imagined it in the 80s.
3. Apple Core II
Not really sure why, but probably my favorite track on the entire album, just take a listen.
4. The Art of Video Games Anthem
About as epic and orchestral as you can get within the limitation of 8bit sound. Really looking forward to seeing this one live.
5. Miami Dub Bounce
Similar to track 2, more spaceflight and lasers.
6. We Fight for the Users
Reminiscent of TRON (as the title suggests). Needs more lightcycle battles.
7. Drive Grinder
One of the most upbeat tracks on the album, a catchy tune that will have you moving to the music.
8. Escape from Xenon
One of my other favorite tracks. Really makes you feel like time is not on your side and you need to get out of this tunnel/cave/exploding moon.
9. Goodbye Cochise
Feels like this is the real closing track to the album and the rest is just bonus material. Winds things down nicely.
10. Closer 2.0
Why yes, yes I do want you too…
11. Micro Boogie 2.0
Boogie Down! Really fun disco track. Nice and bouncy.
12. Chip On Your Shoulder (Electric High Mix)
A little less chiptune remix of this track, quite danceable.
13. Closer (8 Bit Bandit Remix)
My favorite remix on the album. Great electro/progressive-house feel.
14. Chip On Your Shoulder (Sanxion7 Remix)
I lied. I think this is actually tied for favorite remix.
The last three tracks are demo versions of three of the others on the album. Interesting to see how the songs originally sounded.
15. Bits with Byte Demo
16. The Art Of Video Games Anthem Demo
17. Galactic Invasion Demo
Overall, one of the best chiptune albums I’ve heard in the past 2 years of running this site. But then again, 8 Bit Weapon have been around for a decade.
The new, slightly more chaotic and noise direction of the tracks is quite enjoyable.
