The End of the World didn’t happen.
My eyes died a little though, can I design your stage lighting please?

Nixsin opened, and brought the bassweight as usual. Even though I’ve seen him like 15 times now he never gets old. First time I saw trainwreck, but he double backspun and faked like he was supposed to do that. I see you, even if no one else does.

Next up was Torro Torro. This was my first time seeing them, and they were even better than I had heard. They went quite hard in the Trap. The crowd was going absolutely nuts for most of their set.

Designer Drugs took to the decks next. These fucking guys. First time I’ve seen both of them on the decks since Fall Massive 2 YEARS AGO, and oh man they did not disappoint. I think this was the hardest set I have EVER heard from them. Straight annihilation for over an hour.

And to close out the night was the one and only FIGURE. I ended up meeting up with Gangsta Fun a little while before Figure went on. And he went IN. Played very nearly, if not ALL originals, which is something he had mentioned that he was working towards.

First, a special thanks to Steez Promo and Hipster Overkill for booking him and the rest of the show at DC Mega, and letting me stay after I snuck backstage. This wouldn’t have happened without you guys continuing to bring serious heat into the area.

WLN: What is your name or alias?
XKore:

My name is Matt Cavender, I go by the stage name xKore.

WLN: Where are you from?
XKore:

I’m from a small town in the UK called Sittingbourne, it’s kinda close to London.

WLN: What would you call your style of music?
XKore:

Bass music.

WLN: How long have you been making music?
XKore:

I’ve been producing for about 4-5 years now, started with house, trance and electro stuff and eventually fell into dubstep a couple years ago. Naturally DJing became a necessity once my popularity started to pick up.

WLN: What equipment/software/hardware do you use to make your music?
XKore:

I’m all software based other than headphones, I use dre beats studios. My primary synths are Massive, Sylenth1, 3xOsc and Nexus2. Primary effects I use are Sonnox, SPL, Waves, Izotope packs.

WLN: You got your start on newgrounds. I don’t think there are any other producers I’ve seen get as big as you have that got their start from there. Can you tell us a little bit about that experience and the community and how it may have helped you?
XKore:

Newgrounds is a website where artists create flash animations and games, there’s a section for hobbyist producers to upload music so that animators can use legal music in their content. A community formed from that. That was the first place I uploaded my early music to. I think it was a good place to start because I didn’t have to try and compete with ‘real’ producers and try and make it big from the start, instead I learnt to continue producing for my own interest in producing primarily and also to gain the respect of other producers around me.

WLN: Where would you like to be in 5 years in terms of your musical career?
XKore:

I don’t really want to think that far ahead to be honest. I just want to focus on now, shoot for the moon and see where it takes me. I’ve kind of learnt that a lot of unexpected things can happen, and that trying to emulate what others have done will only keep me at a step below them. I just want to be in a position where I can do my own thing, and by doing so it will take me my own way.

WLN: When did you first become interested in electronic style music? Do you remember the first song that got you interested in this style of music?
XKore:

I can’t pinpoint an exact moment since I feel like I’ve always been into EDM. My older brothers grew up on the DnB scene so naturally I’ve had that since a very young age. Listening to the Bonkers compilations (UK Hardcore) were a very early inspiration aswell. I can remember the first time I really learnt what dubstep was was when I found Rusko’s minimix for Annie Mac on radio 1, which led me to discover more of the same type of music. This was about 2 years ago.

WLN: What artist(s) would you consider to be influential in creating your own music?
XKore:

In terms of production: Pendulum/Knife Party, Camo n Krooked, DJ Fresh, Sub Focus, Spor, Noisia, Nero, The Prodigy. In terms of what drives me to produce and explore new ideas: Yoko Kanno, Harry Gregson Williams, SebAstian, James Blake.

WLN: What is your favorite part about touring?
XKore:

Really can’t say a single thing is my favourite, the whole experience is something I feel honoured to be able to do for a living. Travelling all over the world, meeting loads of different people, playing my favourite music, partying, girls.

On Saturday, October 27th from 6pm – 4am BADASS entertainment presents,
Psychedelic Nightmare, at Echostage in Washington D.C. This will be the third annual
Halloween celebration BADASS has thrown under the title. Last year’s celebration
maxed out at 3500 people of all walks of life from avid ravers & clubbers to professionals
who wished to enter a place where they could leave the weekday world behind them
for a night. Since then, the event has taken its place as one of the largest Halloween
celebrations in the Northeast.

Psychedelic Nightmare will feature all categories of electronica & bass music,
featuring DJ’s & producers like John 00 Fleming (Trance) ; Sigma (Drum & bass); Lady
Faith (Hardstyle); Mantis (Dubstep); DJ 2rip (multi-genre); and Saeed Younan (tech-
house). Supplementing the lineup are Malphunktion, Bassdread, Obscure, Elemental,
and Gaby Noodle; all of which are some of the most well-known DJ’s in the northeast
dance music scene.

Host of the event, Chad Bozzarelli states,”This series has really made its way
into history for its attendees. We’ve consistently given people an atmosphere where you
actually feel like you have traveled to another dimension. The difficult thing about doing
that is you get into the habit of always needing to outdo yourself. This year’s celebration
is going to completely knock it out of the park in terms of atmosphere and production.”

This year will feature brand new production in lights & sound as well as a
haunted house decoration installation amongst interactive performances from the
Electrocute talent & theatrics group.

The soundtrack will be produced by NOISIA and Combichrist.
The game is due out on Jan 15 on PS3 and 360.

We had great freedom but were also bound by certain criteria typical in the game world, these are challenging boundaries (for example; consistency in sonics over 180 minutes of music) but also lots of space in terms of dynamics & progression and instrumentation, being able to create soundscapes without having to worry about holding the attention of a dancefloor.
